A deep-water left that absorbs more swell than almost anything else in the Mentawais, Thunders breaks off South Mentawai's Pagai Selatan and is accessible by charter boat only. S to SW swell from 3ft to well overhead feeds thick, shifting peaks across a submerged coral reef. E to SE winds hold it clean and mid tide is the sweet spot, though it runs at all tides. Only experienced surfers will consistently read the shifting lineup and manage the strong currents pulling through the channel. Bottom: coral reef. Season: March to November. Consistency: high, and it's the default destination when surrounding breaks go flat. Bring a bigger board than you think you need: the long drop demands it, and extra volume makes the current workable between sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Gets busy when everything else in the Mentawais goes flat, since it's the last spot standing in light swell. The rotating charter circuit concentrates traffic here on those days. Vibe is welcoming by Mentawai standards, primarily surf tourists, but a shifting lineup combined with strong currents means underprepared surfers create real hazards for everyone. Know where you are before paddling out.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only from a live-aboard or day-trip charter operating out of the South Mentawais. No parking, no facilities on land. Reef cuts and hold-downs are the main hazards. There is a beach in front of the wave, useful for reading the shifting sections before your session.

Nearby Alternatives

When Thunders is too big or too sectiony, nearby Rags Left offers a less punishing wall on the same swell. Lance's Right (HT's) to the north is the go-to if you want a right-hander and the swell has more south in it.
