A fun, versatile reef break tucked into the Mentawai Islands chain, 4 Bobs delivers short punchy walls that can get genuinely hollow when the tide drops. SW to W swell in the 3-8ft range is where this wave does its best work, with light SE trade winds keeping faces clean through the dry season. Low tide is the key variable here: drop the water and the reef starts producing short but shapely barrels that reward surfers willing to sit and wait for the right set. Works for intermediate and up, and the empty crowd count is a legitimate perk in an archipelago that sees heavy charter-boat traffic on its marquee breaks. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Bring a shortboard and a spare fin set, because shallow reef and Indo current can end your session in a hurry if something snaps.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Empty lineups both weekdays and weekends, which is a genuine selling point in the Mentawais. Charter boats occasionally pass through, but 4 Bobs sits off the main circuit of must-surf marquee stops. Enjoy the solitude, share sets generously when boats do show up, and you'll rarely have an issue.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat only, standard for the Mentawais. Coordinate through a charter or land camp on Sipora or the Pagai islands. No beach facilities, no fresh water onshore. Reef is shallow at low tide, so booties are worth considering, and reef first aid kit on the boat is non-negotiable. Watch the Indo current on the paddle-out.

Nearby Alternatives

When 4 Bobs is too small or too fat, the broader Mentawai chain offers options in every direction. Nearby reef passes and points pick up more swell angle on different tides, so your boat captain's local knowledge is your best asset for finding what's working on the day.
