A ledgy, unpredictable right-hander in the Mentawais that rewards patience and punishes impatience, Bankvaults sits a short boat ride south of Nipussi and delivers some of the heaviest barrels in the archipelago. It needs SW to W swell at 5ft and up to wake up, handles overhead-plus conditions well, and the inside bowl throws wide, cavernous pits when it's on. Offshore winds from the SE keep it groomed. Best tide is all stages, though the run-out tide pulls you too deep on the takeoff zone, so manage your position carefully. This is strictly experienced-surfer territory: the reef is big and breaks inconsistently across multiple peaks, making crowd management tricky even when few boats are in the water. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: solid when the Mentawai swell machine fires. Take an extra litre of water on the boat because sessions here run long, and getting caught inside means sustained hold-downs in churning water, not reef lacerations.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Boat-access only keeps crowds thin by Mentawai standards. A few surfers in the water is typical even on weekends. The crowd is self-selecting: only experienced surfers end up here, which keeps the vibe focused. Watch the wave from the channel before paddling out, read how it's breaking that day, and respect others who have already picked their peak.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, no paddle-in option. Located a short distance south of Nipussi. Arrive via liveaboard or day charter out of the Mentawai resorts. No beach facilities on site. Bring water, sunscreen, and a well-padded quiver. The reef is deep enough that hold-downs are the primary hazard rather than lacerations, but treat it with respect.

Nearby Alternatives

Nipussi is just north and offers a different character when Bankvaults is too shifty or too big. When the whole region is pumping, the broader Mentawai circuit gives options across multiple moods and sizes.
