A fast, nippy right-hander off the north side of Nyang Nyang Island, Pitstops punches well above its size class at small to moderate swell. It thrives on SW to W swell from 2-5ft, with offshore winds from the SE, and is best surfed around mid tide to avoid the reef exposure at dead low. The wave is short, rarely stretching beyond 50m, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in shape: a quick, hollow wall that barrels through consistently and offers real performance surfing for its size. It suits intermediates through advanced surfers and draws a steady crowd of boat-trippers and camp guests, meaning the lineup can fill up fast during peak season. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: moderate to good in the core swell window. Watch dead low tide carefully as the reef comes up sharply and makes the paddle-out and exit genuinely hazardous.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Pitstops sits in Mentawai boat-trip territory, so the crowd is almost entirely visiting surfers from charter boats and the two established surf camps on Nyang Nyang Island. It can get competitive during peak season (May to September), especially when nearby bigger-name breaks are too large or blown out and this spot offers a fun alternative. Localism from residents is minimal, but respect standard boat-trip etiquette in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

The break is not visible from a anchored boat, so worth paddling in or dinghying over to check before committing. Two surf camps operate on the island and offer accommodation and meals, basic land-based stays with locals have also been available for budget travelers. Bring adequate water and sun protection regardless of where you stay. The channel provides a workable paddle-out route but keep clear of the reef at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pitstops is too small or the crowd is stacked, the broader Nyang Nyang and Telo Islands chain offers a range of reef breaks within a short boat ride. If more size or punch is needed, the central Mentawai chain has no shortage of options within a half-day charter.
