Reserved for pros, Promises sits on the outer reefs past Ngiau Island in the Mentawai chain, one of the more consequential right-handers in a region already stacked with consequence. It demands a SW to W swell of solid size to switch on, and when it does, it unloads fast and hollow over shallow reef with almost no room for error. The paddle-out and positioning require experience, the wave itself is unforgiving from first section to last. Access is by boat charter only, keeping crowds minimal, but the lineup self-selects anyway. Kooks and intermediate surfers have no business here. Bottom: reef. Season: April through October, peak in June to August. Consistency: infrequent, swell-dependent. If you're not surfing at a high level and prepared to handle a violent end-section over exposed reef, stay on the boat and watch.
Charter-only access means the crowd is structurally limited. On any given day, you may share the lineup with one or two boats worth of surfers, all of whom are there because they can surf the wave. No localism to speak of, but the standard charter etiquette applies: rotate, respect the crew, don't snake guests from other boats.
Boat charter only. No land access, no facilities, no beach to retreat to. Come with a quiver, a full first-aid kit aboard your vessel, and reef booties are worth considering given the end-section. Distance from Padang means you'll be three to five days into a charter before reaching this zone.
When Promises isn't firing, the broader Mentawai chain offers options at every tide and swell angle. Ebay and other outer reefs in the Ngiau zone handle similar swell windows. Head south toward the Playground cluster or north toward Telescopes when the swell drops or shifts.
