Lances Left delivers long, rippable walls and ledgy barrel sections off a submerged coral reef at the southern end of Sipura Island, Mentawais. SW swell is the engine, with the wave funneling cleanly into the bay on E winds at mid tide, working chest-high through double-overhead before it turns gurgly and unpredictable beyond that range. Up to three defined sections fire across the reef: a fast top section, a workable mid-section, and a punishing end section that sucks hollow and stays unmakeable for all but the committed. Intermediate surfers can find walls to work, but shallow coral and serious power at size make this wave best for experienced riders. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to September. Consistency: high. Bring a back-up board, shallow reef cuts are a real risk on wipeouts.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is essentially non-existent here, as the lineup is almost exclusively visiting surfers from charter boats and land camps. Crowd levels are moderate to heavy when multiple boats anchor nearby, and the wave often receives overflow from the famous right across the channel. Dawn sessions or low-traffic weeks reduce the pressure noticeably.

Access & Facilities

Boat access is the standard approach, land camp setups exist but facilities are minimal to none. No parking, no shops, no medical care nearby. Pack reef booties for getting in and out, and carry your own water and first aid. The keyhole exit is essential knowledge for big days when getting caught inside on the reef is genuinely dangerous.

Nearby Alternatives

Lances Right (HTs) breaks directly across the channel and is the first choice when E winds are offshore and a solid S swell is running. When both spots are maxing out or blown out, charter crews typically run north or south along Sipura for more sheltered options.
