Macaronis Right sits across the bay from its far more famous left-hand neighbour in the Mentawais, offering a quieter option when charter boats stack up on the main wave. It needs N-NE offshore wind, a solid S to SW swell, and mid to high tide to iron out the reef's irregularities and find its two distinct moods: long carvable walls and legitimate throwing tube sections. Intermediate surfers with solid reef experience will find this an approachable, satisfying ride, and the crowd pressure here is a fraction of what you'll face at Macaronis Left directly across the bay. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: medium, requires specific swell and tide alignment to perform. Bring a standard shortboard and time your sessions around the tide, at low water the reef gets unforgiving quickly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the quiet side of the anchorage. Charter traffic almost exclusively targets the left, which means Macaronis Right can be nearly empty even when the bay is busy. If the left is packed and conditions are marginal there, check here first. No notable localism concerns, but standard Mentawai charter etiquette applies: respect the lineup order and communicate with other boats in the anchorage.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat only, as with virtually every Mentawai break. No parking, no facilities, no shore access. Come fully provisioned from your charter or surf camp. No pollution or water quality concerns reported. Reef is submerged but present, so reef booties are worth considering, especially near low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

Macaronis Left directly across the bay is one of the Mentawais' most celebrated waves and worth the crowd when it's firing. If the entire bay goes flat or the swell direction swings too far north, the broader North Pagai region holds additional reef setups that activate on different parts of the swell window.
