Nipussi is the Mentawais' go-to right when swell drops and northerly winds clean up the coast, sitting tucked close to shore near the southern end of the Bank Vaults chain. It picks up S to W swell reliably, works on all tides, and holds up from 3ft to around 8ft before the inside shelf gets sketchy. Two distinct peaks give riders options: an outside section for peakier sets and an inside shelf that zippers and occasionally barrels hard. Intermediates can work the walls comfortably, though the inside tube is a step up when it fires. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: high, making it one of the most dependable waves in Playgrounds when conditions are marginal elsewhere. When everyone else is flat, Nipussi is often the only show in town, which means the crowd funnels onto a single main takeoff spot, so patience and lineup etiquette matter more here than at most Mentawai stops.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

As one of the few consistent options in small or marginal conditions, Nipussi draws the entire fleet when other spots are off. There is effectively one main takeoff zone, so the lineup compresses fast. Take turns, respect the queue, and if you are on a boat trip consider timing sessions around neighboring boat schedules. Dawn or late afternoon sessions tend to be thinner.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat charter or resort transfer only. No land access, no parking, no facilities. Bring your own water and snacks. The reef is well-covered compared to heavier Mentawai slabs but stay aware of the rock shelf at the end of the wave on bigger days. No pollution or water quality concerns reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nipussi is maxed or overrun, Bank Vaults to the north picks up the same swell train with more consequence and reward for advanced surfers. Kandui rights nearby offer a mellower warmup option a short paddle from resort moorings.
