A fast, hollow right-hand reef break off Awera Island in Central Mentawai, Suicides earns its name from a ledging barrel that unloads over a shallow coral shelf with little margin for error. It needs a solid S to SW swell in the 4-8ft range, light E to SE trade winds, and mid to high tide to push enough water over the reef before it becomes unrideable. Expert surfers only. The lineup is noticeably quieter than Macaronis or Lance's Right, but still draws a boat-charter crowd during peak season. Bottom: shallow coral reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: fickle, fires maybe a handful of days per charter week. First-time visitors should watch a full set of sets from the channel before paddling out, because the inside section catches most people off guard on their first wave. Wipeouts here end on coral, so a helmet and impact vest are worth the bag space.
Central Mentawai draws fewer boats than the Playgrounds zone to the north, so the lineup at Suicides can be surprisingly open. Peak season (June to September) still sees charter boat clusters during prime swells. Localism from land is minimal, but standard charter-boat etiquette applies: respect rotation, do not snake the boat that positioned earliest.
Suicides is boat-access only, reachable from charter vessels or day trips out of Siberut or a Tua Pejat-based resort. There are no beach facilities on the reef. Bring your own wax, reef booties, and a spare leash. Water quality around Central Mentawai is generally clean away from village outflows.
When Suicides is flat or the tide kills it, nearby E-Bay and Burgerworld offer alternatives across different swell and tide windows in the same general area. Moving north toward the Playground zone opens up a broader menu of rights and lefts if the Central zone is not cooperating.
