Few waves in the Mentawais match Rifles for sheer length and barrel time. Sitting off the west coast of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, this right-hand reef break peels for 300 to 500 metres on a standard swell and can exceed that on a proper pulse. It demands a SW to S swell in the 5 to 12ft range, with mid to high tide keeping the reef at a manageable depth. Offshore winds are E to SE. The wave is hollow, fast, and mechanically unforgiving: shallow coral, multiple barrel sections, and a long paddle back to the lineup after every ride. Access is by liveaboard or boat-only resort trips from Padang. Boat traffic and resort packages can stack 20 surfers in the lineup simultaneously, so choosing a quality operator with a strict guest cap matters more here than almost anywhere else in the region. Bottom: coral reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: swell-dependent but reliable in peak season. Bring a spare board and a spare leash, both are regularly claimed by this wave.
There are no locals here in the traditional sense, but resort and liveaboard operators control access and some flood the lineup without regard for session quality. Reports of 20 surfers dropped at once are credible. Research your operator before booking. Dawn sessions and mid-week windows during shoulder months offer the best chance of a manageable crowd.
Rifles is accessible only by boat, either via liveaboard departing Padang or from one of the Mentawai island resorts. There is no paddle-in access from shore. Bring reef booties if your feet are sensitive, a full quiver of boards, and quality wax for warm water. Medical facilities are remote, so travel insurance with evacuation cover is non-negotiable.
When Rifles is maxed out or too crowded, E-Bay and Lances Right (HT's) offer longer-period relief with slightly more forgiving takeoff zones. Ebay in particular can handle bigger swells and provides a mellow alternative on smaller days.
