One of the fastest down-the-line left barrels on the planet, Kandui runs along a fringing reef off the NW corner of Karangmajat Island deep in the Mentawais. SW swell is the key ingredient, ideally 8ft and above on the face, paired with light E to NE winds and a mid to high tide. Below 8ft the shallow coral becomes genuinely dangerous, so do not let anyone talk you into paddling out on a small day. This is expert-only water: the featureless lineup offers no landmark, the takeoff is an air-drop, and the only exit strategy from the first section is already being in the barrel at full sprint. Boat access only from the Playgrounds anchorage. Bottom: shallow coral reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: medium. Pack a thruster you can trust at speed and bring a helmet if ego allows.
The vibe in the water is generally welcoming and the lineup is rarely jammed. Moderate boat traffic from the Playgrounds anchorage means you may share sets with a handful of experienced surfers, but the wave's difficulty self-selects. Respect the drop order and do not paddle into positions you cannot commit to at this speed.
Boat access only. No beach, no parking, no facilities. Depart from charter vessels anchored at Playgrounds. The nearest resort infrastructure is Kandui Resort, a short ride away. Bring everything you need for the day. The reef is sharp coral and the primary hazard is contact on a missed wave.
When Kandui is too big or too raw, the inside reef at Playgrounds offers a more forgiving right-hander a short paddle away. For complete rest days or when the swell drops, the pointbreak to the north holds shape in lighter conditions and handles smaller, cleaner swells well.
