Greenbush is a punishing, ultra-hollow left over shallow coral in the Mentawais, demanding full commitment from the takeoff to the channel or the reef. It fires on S to SW swell at 4-10ft, with N winds keeping the face clean and spring high tide filling in the water over the reef enough to make the drop survivable. The end section accelerates and compresses as the reef shallows, forcing a split-second choice between committing deep into the barrel or eating coral on the straighten. Tube specialists only. Bottom: submerged coral reef. Season: April to October. Consistency: medium. Arrive at high tide and leave before it drops, because low tide here is not a learning experience.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Charter boats pass through regularly but Greenbush is finicky enough that it clears itself out. Only when it lines up perfectly do boats commit to the lineup. No localism to speak of, but the wave itself does a fine job of filtering who stays in the water. Respect the hierarchy of surfers who are clearly more prepared for the tube.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only, no parking, no facilities. Factor in a boat charter from Padang or a resort package. Reef cuts are the primary hazard. Booties are worth considering. Bring your own wax, fins, and any first-aid you might need, because the nearest anything is a long ride away.

Nearby Alternatives

When Greenbush isn't lining up, Bowls offers fun right walls nearby, and Gilligans provides a more forgiving right option in the same general zone. Bigger swell days can be redirected toward the wave in front of the Siruso Lighthouse if you want more size and power.
