A small peninsula south of Coquimbo hosts at least three distinct point-breaks, making Totoralillo one of the more varied setups on Chile's central coast. Two rights and a left wrap around rocky headlands, with the main right picking up swells from 1m and a second right and the left-hander only switching on above 2m. SW to NW Pacific swell is the engine here, and offshore winds out of the east keep faces clean. The lineup suits intermediate to advanced surfers, the boulders are large and shallow inside, so anyone prone to getting caught inside needs to think carefully. Bottom: reef and rock. Season: March to June for the cleaner conditions with smaller beach crowds. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Pack a 3/2 at minimum, 4/3 with booties when the cold Humboldt current runs, and watch your positioning if a set catches you deep.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay quiet. Weekends, particularly in the Chilean summer (December to February), bring beach crowds that spill into the lineup. Locals are reported as friendly, but the condensed point layout means positioning matters. March through June offers the best balance of swell quality and fewer bodies in the water.

Access & Facilities

Totoralillo sits 18km south of Coquimbo off the Panamericana. A signed 2km side road leads to the beach. Basic coastal facilities exist in the area, but bring water and food. The inside boulders are the main hazard. A 3/2 to 4/3 wetsuit plus booties is strongly recommended given Humboldt-influenced water temperatures.

Nearby Alternatives

Coquimbo and La Serena to the north have more sheltered beach breaks when exposed points like Totoralillo are too raw. If the swell is maxing out the main points, the smaller right at the same peninsula is worth checking before driving north.
