A powerful submerged reef setup anchoring one of central Chile's most consistent surf zones, Algarrobo sits roughly 100km southwest of Santiago. El Mejoral, the standout left reefbreak, fires off the rocks behind the yachting pier and needs approaching head-high and mid-to-high tide before it clears the reef properly. As swell builds, the Detroit section kicks in further out and links into the main lineup, extending the ride and adding power. A hollow right called La Chilena also breaks here, preferring W to NW swells. S to NW swell window, NE offshore wind, and a 4-18ft size range give this stretch real versatility across seasons. It suits intermediates who can handle consequence, but the crowd is real, especially in summer, and there is hassling. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: year-round with austral autumn and winter peaks. Consistency: high. Rock encounters are essentially inevitable here, so helmets and impact vests are worth considering, particularly on bigger days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Algarrobo draws consistent crowds, particularly during Chilean summer months (December to February) when Santiago empties toward the coast. Hassling has been reported in the lineup. Respect the locals, read the pecking order early, and consider session timing. Dawn patrol in the off-season will give you the clearest read on conditions with fewer bodies in the water.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking or facilities at the break. The pier provides the main reference point for El Mejoral. Reaching La Chilena requires a long paddle around from the pier. Rock hazards are real throughout the zone and rock strikes are common even for experienced surfers. Town amenities are a short walk away.

Nearby Alternatives

When Algarrobo is maxed or the crowd is unworkable, El Quisco just south offers rockier beach options including La Derecha. Further south, Navidad and Matanzas handle big S swells well with their headland-anchored setups. For a full mission, Pichilemu and the legendary Punta de Lobos are within driving range and absorb more swell range across multiple skill levels.
