A fast, powerful left pointbreak hugging the rocks at the northern end of Horcon, El Claron only wakes up when a solid S swell wraps into the bay, but it earns its place as one of the closest quality pointbreaks to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. Optimal conditions need S to SW swell, 4-12ft, with a southerly offshore keeping it clean. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot before sections get too shallow over the rocks below. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home here, though the tight takeoff zone keeps the lineup competitive when it's on. Bottom: sand over rocks. Season: March to August. Consistency: medium, needs size to wrap in. Despite its appearance as a long point, only two sections see regular surfing: the outer point and the final reform near the rock shelf, so position matters.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Horcon is a small fishing town, and the lineup reflects that. Surfers in the water largely know each other, and the takeoff zone is tight enough that a crowd of ten feels like twenty. Localism is described as welcoming, but that comes with a condition: show respect, take your turn, and don't roll in from Valparaiso acting like you own the place. Dawn patrol reduces friction.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking or facilities at the break. Park in town and walk back toward the point, or leave the car at the hilltop and scramble down. Water quality is generally fair but can deteriorate after heavy rain. Primary hazard is the rocky bottom at low tide during bigger sets.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Claron is flat or closing out, Maitencillo rivermouth to the north produces quality A-frames along a 2km stretch and handles a wider swell window. Ritoque, further south toward Santiago, offers powerful and consistent beachbreak that picks up swell more reliably when Claron needs size.
