A-frames peel off the rivermouth at Maitencillo's northern end, making this 2km stretch of coarse sand one of the more consistent beachbreaks within reach of Santiago. S to W swells in the 3-8ft range are the window, with offshore easterlies glassing it up, ideally around mid tide. The best peaks cluster near the rivermouth and at Abanico to the north, where morning glass sessions can produce genuinely punchy walls and the occasional quality left off the rocky south end. Beginners can find space here, though the lineup fills fast on good days and longshore drift is a real factor to watch. Bottom: sand. Season: April to October. Consistency: high. Bring a 3/2 full suit year-round, water temps dip enough even in the warmer months that boardies alone will leave you cold after an hour.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals are relaxed by Chilean standards, but this stretch draws numbers from Viña del Mar and Santiago on weekends. Expect a full lineup when conditions align. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the practical move. Longshore drift catches out beginners, so paddle back to your entry point regularly and keep track of where you are on the beach.

Access & Facilities

Head north from Viña del Mar on the coast road, roughly 60km. Maitencillo is a small town with basic accommodation and food options. No dedicated surf facilities or parking lot at the beach, so arrive early to sort logistics. Water quality at the rivermouth can be variable after rain given the Aconcagua drainage upstream.

Nearby Alternatives

When a big S swell locks in, La Punta at El Claron offers a left pointbreak peeling over sand-covered reef. For a change of pace on blown or maxed days, Quintero to the south has a sheltered bay with a long left that occasionally barrels over shallow reef.
