A long left-hand sandbar tube wrapping around a private headland south of Santiago, Puertecillo earns comparisons to the best left sandbars in the world when the sand banks line up right. SW swells are cleaned up beautifully as they wrap around the point, arriving more groomed than exposed beaches nearby. SE winds hold the face up. Best size is head-high to double overhead, and the wave starts working around 5-6ft with capacity to hold well above that. Low to mid tide is the call for the most hollow, fastest sections. Access is the catch: the point sits on private farmland, and permission from the landowners must be arranged before arrival. Showing up without clearance means turning back. Intermediate to advanced surfers who sort access in advance find a camping-only setup with zero facilities but waves that can run 150-300m on a solid day, and beyond 300m when it is really firing. Bottom is sand over rock. Season runs late autumn through winter, May to September. Consistency is swell-dependent but rewards patience.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays can be empty or near-empty. Weekends draw a camping crowd from Santiago, and with no town infrastructure, dozens can end up in the water during a good swell. The local vibe is reported as welcoming and mellow with few permanent residents in the lineup. Groups from Reñaca have been known to bring a more aggressive energy, so read the scene before paddling out.

Access & Facilities

Permission to enter the private hacienda must be obtained in advance, ideally through a local contact or the landowners directly. There are no facilities: no running water, no food, no rentals. Pack in everything. Camping is the only option. The main hazard flagged is turning your back on the ocean, standard protocol on a powerful open-coast point. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta de Lobos, a short distance north, is more exposed and picks up swell more reliably when Puertecillo is undersized. It is also a well-known left point, easier to access, and worth checking when SW groundswell is marginal at the point.
