Fast, powerful beach-break peaks at Punta Piedra (also known as Punta Ritoque) fire off a stretch of Central Chilean coast that stays uncrowded most of the year. The spot picks up swell from a wide window and is one of the most consistent setups in the region, working on anything from knee-high to well overhead and beyond. Offshore winds from the east keep faces clean, the dominant swell window is SW to NW, which Central Chile receives reliably through autumn and winter. Both lefts and rights peel off depending on the sandbar, giving experienced surfers options on any given swell. The rip current here is serious and a defining characteristic of this break: at 1.5m and above, the current becomes strong enough to push surfers into rocks, so honest water-reading skills and solid paddling are non-negotiable. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, peak autumn-winter. Consistency: very consistent, roughly 150 surf days per year. Arrive at dawn during summer to beat the crowds that gather for beach parties later in the day.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is genuinely quiet for most of the year. Summer brings beachgoers and occasional surfers, but the water stays relatively uncrowded compared to nearby La Boca or Ritoque. No notable localism reported, but rip hazard acts as a natural filter keeping inexperienced surfers out of the peak.

Access & Facilities

Reach the spot by car with a short 5-15 minute walk to the beach. A 4WD vehicle helps for the final approach. Access is public. Facilities are minimal at the break itself. A skatepark nearby offers a fallback when onshore winds blow out the surf. Bring water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

When Punta Piedra is too big or the current is unmanageable, Ritoque and La Boca are the closest alternatives a short drive away and tend to handle smaller, more manageable conditions. Both spots share a similar swell window and offer a less demanding paddle-out.
