A fast, ledgy left-hand boulder reef that stands up hard from take-off and punishes anyone who hesitates, Santa Rosa sits at the northern end of the San Bartolo headland string of lefts in Southern Peru. SW to W swells in the 5-10ft range are the sweet spot, with more westerly angle opening up a bonus right that delivers short punchy walls. Easterly offshores keep it clean, and mid tide is the window to aim for since the shallow boulder bottom gets dangerous at lower stages. This is an intermediate-to-advanced wave with thin crowds most of the time, rewarding those who commit fully on take-off. Bottom: boulder reef. Season: April through September. Consistency: medium. The paddle-out is awkward and currents run hard on bigger days, so read the channel before committing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are genuinely thin here most sessions. The combination of awkward access, demanding paddle-out, and a wave that doesn't forgive hesitation keeps numbers low. That said, respect the lineup on those rare occasions it fills up. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best bet for uncrowded peaks.

Access & Facilities

Take the turn-off toward Santa Rosa just before San Bartolo, which is poorly signed. Park as far south as possible. The parking closest to the point typically requires a 4x4. From the last easy parking it is a 2-3 minute walk to the water. No facilities on site. Bring water, food, and everything you need. No significant pollution concerns noted.

Nearby Alternatives

El Huayco and Peña Rosa are both directly south past the dry riverbed and offer similar boulder-reef left setups when Santa Rosa is either too big or too small. Punta Rocas is the most consistent option in the wider area when the swell drops, though it comes with significantly heavier crowds.
