A wide-open beachbreak on Peru's southern coast, Pulpos sits just off the Pan-American Highway and catches swell from a broad S-to-NW window with impressive consistency. NE offshores groom the banks, and the wave works across all tides, though size matters: push it past 6ft and the banks turn into one long close-out wall. This is fundamentally a bodyboarder's wave, steep and punchy with barrels that shut down fast rather than wall up for drawn-out carves. Intermediate shortboarders can find fun, but arrive with honest expectations. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with consistent swell. Consistency: high. Parking is residents-only and restricted, so plan your access around that reality, and the strong rips along this stretch demand respect before you paddle out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rare here, which is one of the few genuine plus points. The lack of facilities and restricted parking keeps the lineup thin. Bodyboarders tend to dominate on the better days, so shortboarders should pick their peaks and stay out of the way on the steeper close-out sections.

Access & Facilities

Signposted off the Pan-American Highway. Parking is strictly residents-only, so roadside options are your best bet. There are no facilities on site, meaning no water, food, or rentals. Strong rips are a consistent hazard along this stretch. Come self-sufficient and study the channels before committing to a paddle-out.

Nearby Alternatives

The broader southern Peru coast has significantly better waves a short drive in either direction. Heading north opens up a string of better-quality options, including longer right-hand setups with more wall. If Pulpos is maxed out or blown, the same swell pulse will be lighting up superior banks and reef setups nearby.
