A long peeling left pointbreak south of Lima, Puerto Viejo wraps S and SW swell around a headland and unloads across extensive sandbars for rides stretching well past 100m on good days. It fires best on S to SW swells from 3-8ft, with SE offshores keeping faces clean. Low tide is preferred but it breaks at all tides, and a prominent headland shields the lineup from southerly winds. Intermediates and up will find plenty to work with: linear walls with punchy lip sections ideal for turns and floaters, plus the occasional hollow pocket. Consistency is high when Lima's swell window is open. Bottom: sand over point structure. Season: peaks May through October on South Pacific swells. Consistency: high. Access is off the Panamericana at km 71, down a rough dirt road best managed in something with decent clearance, though a 4x4 is not strictly necessary.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The permanent local crew is thin, but when Lima surfers make the run south on weekends, the lineup fills fast. During the prime May to October season, expect a competitive crowd on any good swell. Weekday mornings are the obvious move. Localism is not heavy, but respect the lineup when it is on.

Access & Facilities

Pull off the Panamericana around km 71 and follow the dirt road for roughly five minutes to the beach. The road is rocky and potholed. There may be an entry fee at the gate. A car park is available and a lifeguard is on duty. Bring water and food since facilities beyond the basics are limited. When the water is big and breaking against the point rocks, bird waste washes into the surf, so ear plugs are a smart call.

Nearby Alternatives

When Puerto Viejo is too small, head up the beach to the Tres Islas stretch, known as Puerto Nuevo, for shorter but punchy sandbank barrels. San Bartolo is roughly 15 minutes north and offers additional options if the point is blown out or maxed.
