A submerged reef break accessible only by boat, El Camotal sits in the shipping lane between San Lorenzo Island and La Punta on Lima's coast. It picks up S to NW swell and fires best in the 4-6ft range on any tide, though wind exposure from the busy channel frequently chops up the face. The wave breaks both left and right, gets occasionally hollow, and on clean days can wall out to 150-300m on good sets. Expert surfers only: the crossing involves active commercial shipping traffic and there are no facilities or rescue resources anywhere near the lineup. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: most consistent autumn through winter, April to October. Consistency: medium. Book a boat from La Punta rather than paddling, the channel crossing is roughly an hour by paddle through commercial vessel traffic and is not recommended. Water quality carries some commercial pollution from the nearby port.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is almost always empty on weekends and the boat-access requirement keeps casual crowds away naturally. La Punta locals who know the spot tend to keep it quiet. No localism pressure reported, but the vibe is earned through the effort required to get there.

Access & Facilities

Boat hire from La Punta is the practical option. Paddling across is possible but takes roughly an hour through active commercial shipping lanes and is genuinely dangerous. No parking, no facilities, no fresh water. Bring everything you need. The reef itself sits near a navigational buoy. Commercial vessel traffic is a real hazard before and after surfing, not just in the lineup.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Camotal is blown out or too small, La Herradura to the south is Lima's best pointbreak and worth the drive. Closer to Miraflores, Makaha and Redondo pick up similar swell and offer more accessible lineups without the boat logistics.
