Playa Honda is a mellow beachbreak on the Montevideo coastline of Uruguay, delivering small, punchy peaks that reward patient surfers willing to wait out onshore conditions. It needs N to E swell to fire, and those same winds that generate the waves tend to roughen the surface, so clean days are the exception rather than the rule. Best performance comes after storm swells push energy along the coast, with wave faces up to 6ft on exposed days, though 2-4ft is the typical working range. It suits beginners and intermediate surfers comfortably, the crowd is light most days but weekends draw more locals to the water. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter, when N-E storm swells are most active. Consistency: medium. Pack a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit depending on season, and bring a longer board to catch the slower, gutless sections between sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Generally quiet on weekdays with a friendly local crew. Weekends bring noticeably more surfers to what is considered Montevideo's most surfable beach. No reported localism issues. Respect the lineup, give priority to locals who know the shifting banks, and you will be fine.

Access & Facilities

Directly accessible from Montevideo with parking available at the beach. No facilities on site, so bring water and food. Water quality raises no major concerns. The wave is exposed and wind-affected most of the time, so check forecasts before making the trip.

Nearby Alternatives

Playa Malvín Chica is recommended by locals as another rideable option in Montevideo when Playa Honda is not cooperating. Further along the Uruguayan coast, Punta del Diablo and La Paloma offer more consistent beach and point options worth exploring if you have transport.
