Makaha is where big-wave surfing was invented, a four-section reef on Oahu's west side that has been testing surfers since the 1930s. Optimal conditions are NW to W swell, 6-15ft, on mid to high tide with light NE trade winds offshore. The Point, the Bowl, the Blowhole, and the Inside Reef each offer distinct challenges, and on serious NW pulses the wave lines up longer and more evenly than the North Shore alternatives. Experienced surfers only, the community here is tight-knit and the lineup reflects that. Bottom: coral reef. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: reliable in winter groundswells. Bring a step-up or gun for anything over 8ft, and read the shorebreak carefully before paddling out as backwash and undertow are real hazards.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends are ultra crowded. The surrounding community is one of the last ethnic Hawaiian strongholds on Oahu, and the lineup carries that weight. Respect is non-negotiable. Don't paddle around locals, don't snake sets, and don't bring a crew. Midweek dawn sessions reduce crowd pressure, but attitude adjustments are free and mandatory here regardless of when you paddle out.

Access & Facilities

Head west along Kamehameha Highway past Nanakuli. Roadside parking is available near the beach with marked stalls. Basic facilities in the area. No reef boots needed but watch for urchins on the inside sections. The shorebreak is dangerous at size and has caused serious injuries, always observe before entering.

Nearby Alternatives

When Makaha is too big or maxed out, Pokai Bay to the south offers a mellower option in smaller NW swell. Keawaula (Yokohama Bay) further up toward Kaena Point picks up more raw swell and offers a quieter lineup for those willing to make the drive.
