A long left-hand pointbreak peeling along the base of stark brown cliffs in the Chorrillos district south of Lima, Herradura is the best wave the city has to offer and one of the most technically demanding in Peru. It needs a solid SW to W swell to fire, starting around 6ft and improving significantly as size builds toward 12ft faces. Offshore SE winds dominate here, and low to mid tide produces the sharpest sections. This is an experts-only wave that draws heavy crowds from Lima's large surf population, so expect a competitive lineup with genuine drop-in pressure from locals who know every section. Bottom: rock and sand point. Season: May to October. Consistency: medium, requires committed swell. Paddle-out entry requires careful timing, the rip intensifies on the inside sections as the swell builds, so know your exit before you paddle in. Water quality is relatively clean given its distance from central Lima's runoff.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Heavy crowds every session. Locals burn visitors without hesitation and priority in the lineup is earned, not given. Come with patience, read the pecking order before paddling for sets, and do not expect charity. Weekend sessions are ultra-crowded. Dawn patrol on a weekday is the closest you will get to breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Located on the headland in Chorrillos, south of Miraflores along the Circuito de Playas coastal road. Parking available near the beach. Choose your entry point deliberately: the jump rock on the point demands good timing, and the rip on the inside can be strong when swell is running. Chorrillos is a working-class district. Keep valuables locked in the car and stay aware of your surroundings on land. Restrooms available.

Nearby Alternatives

When Herradura is too big or too crowded, Sombrillas and Ala Moana to the north offer lefts that come alive on strong southerly swells. South of Miraflores, Barranco-area breaks face NW and need larger S to SW swell to show, giving additional options if the point is closing out.
