A consistent beachbreak anchored by a reliable jetty left, San Bartolo sits roughly 53km south of Lima on the Panamericana and draws Lima surfers every weekend of the summer season. The primary swell window runs S through NW, working from 3ft up to a credible 10ft-plus on bigger swells. Mid to high tide cleans up the wave shape considerably. Intermediate surfers will find the most fun here, though the broad range of peaks across Playa Norte means beginners can find their footing and more experienced surfers can push into the jetty section when conditions cooperate. Bottom: sand with jetty influence. Season: year-round, peaks in southern hemisphere summer. Consistency: high. On small days the middle-bay A-frame peak is the most forgiving option, but when the southern jetty left is running it handles size and rewards a more committed approach on a slightly longer board.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

San Bartolo earns its reputation as a friendly lineup, but that goodwill erodes fast on summer weekends when Lima empties onto the Panamericana. Weekday sessions are markedly more relaxed. The vibe is generally welcoming with none of the heavy localism found at nearby spots like Punta Rocas. Respect the pecking order at the jetty left regardless.

Access & Facilities

San Bartolo is clearly signed off the Panamericana at around the 53km mark. A carpark serves the beach, and lifeguards are on duty during peak season. Buses 16 and 18 from Lima drop you in the town centre, from there a mototaxi covers the last stretch to Playa Norte cheaply. Rooms to rent are easy to find for overnight trips. No major pollution or hazard concerns, though El Niño years can dramatically shift water temperature and wave quality across this stretch of coast.

Nearby Alternatives

When San Bartolo is maxed out or overrun, Peñascal on the northern headland offers a heavier right-point option suited to experienced surfers only. Punta Rocas to the north is more consistent still but notoriously crowded. On small, clean days the longer left points further south around Punta Negra are worth the extra drive.
