Peru's premier big-wave reef breaks a kilometer offshore from Punta Hermosa, 43km south of Lima, drawing serious heavy-water specialists from around the world. It needs a massive S or SW swell to fire, starts working at 12-15ft and holds well past 30ft faces without closing out. Rides lengthen with size, the right wall favored though the left gets attempted on the right day. Cold, gray, Hawaiian-weight water with long set trains of 15-20 waves means timing and positioning are as demanding as the paddle. Experienced big-wave surfers only. Bottom: rock. Season: April–August peak, workable through winter. Consistency: swell-dependent, empty to moderately crowded when on. Bring a gun in the 9-10ft range and be honest about your fitness before committing to the paddle, because getting caught inside here is a serious situation with nowhere to run.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

For a wave this demanding, the vibe is genuinely welcoming, classic big-wave camaraderie between people who understand the commitment involved. On a firing day expect a moderate crew of dedicated local and traveling big-wave surfers. Respect the hierarchy in the lineup, not because of localism pressure but because experience here has real safety implications. Dawn sessions can be quieter.

Access & Facilities

The break is roughly a kilometer offshore. The paddle from Playa Norte or from Señoritas is the standard approach and takes 20-30 minutes each way in flat conditions. Jet-ski assist is used on the biggest days. When Pico Alto is running, the shore-break at Playa Norte can get dangerous on the way back in. Water is clean but cold year-round. Punta Hermosa has accommodation, food, and is a solid hub for the cluster of quality breaks in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pico Alto is too big or the swell isn't there yet, Kon Tiki, Peñascal, and Punta Rocas are all within a few kilometers and offer quality waves across a wider swell and skill range. On smaller swells, Playa Norte itself provides a beach-break alternative for warming up.
