A heavy, bowly right-hander peeling off a rock reef in San Bartolo, roughly an hour south of Lima, Penascal rewards surfers willing to learn its shifting peak. It picks up S and SSW swell reliably and handles size from overhead to quadruple overhead, with NE to ENE offshores grooming the face. Low tide is the go-to, when the wave ledges in sections and the lip throws thick and fast over shallow rock. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it worth the effort, but the shifty take-off and frequent repositioning of the peak make it unforgiving for anyone not comfortable reading a moving lineup. Bottom: rock reef. Season: March through October. Consistency: good, picks up a lot of swell. Do not turn your back to the ocean here as clean-up sets arrive fast out of deep water with little warning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you may have it to yourself. Weekends draw a handful of surfers, but the wave's technical nature and shifting peak self-select for experienced surfers and keep the lineup from getting saturated. Locals are welcoming, but respect the pecking order and do not park on the inside when someone is dealing with a set.

Access & Facilities

Paddle out from the beach at San Bartolo rather than attempting the point entry or exit, though the paddle is long. The reef is shallow and rocky so boots are worth considering on the lowest tides. Accommodation and surf-camp options are available in San Bartolo, and the bay has basic amenities nearby. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

The beach break at San Bartolo (Playa Norte) offers a more forgiving option when Penascal is too big or the peak is unreadable. Further north, the point breaks around Punta Hermosa and Pico Alto handle larger swells and provide a range of options when south swell is pumping through the region.
