A hollow, powerful A-frame reef break off the Southern Peru coastline near Punta Hermosa, El Paso demands respect before you even paddle out. West to north swells of 6ft and above light it up, with offshore southerlies grooming steep, fast walls that throw out heavy barrels on both sides of the peak. The paddle is long, positioning is critical, and the exit is unforgiving: shallow boulders covered in sea urchins line the shore, and a wrong read on the close-out will put you onto rocks fast. This is an expert-only wave. Crowds are rarely a factor, but that's partly because the consequences of error are real. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through November, with October and November cited as peak months. Consistency: medium. Show up with a proper step-up or gun, check the shore dump carefully before committing, and always paddle toward open water if you get caught inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism pressure is low and crowds are rarely an issue. The combination of difficult access, a long paddle, and serious consequence keeps the lineup thin. That said, don't mistake an empty lineup for a forgiving one. Know your limits before paddling out.

Access & Facilities

El Paso sits roughly 43km south of Lima, adjacent to Punta Hermosa. There are no facilities on site. Parking is free. The shoreline is boulder-strewn and heavily urchin-covered, making entries and exits the most dangerous part of the session. Ask local surfers in Punta Hermosa for current access conditions.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta Hermosa itself hosts several breaks across a range of skill levels when El Paso is out of range or closing out. On smaller swells, the beachbreaks closer to Lima's southern suburbs offer more manageable conditions for intermediate surfers warming up for bigger days.
