A fast-peeling left-hand point on Peru's remote Bayovar headland, Punta Tur produces genuinely long waves that section aggressively, splitting a 200-500m ride into multiple demanding chunks. Optimal conditions align on S to SW swell in the 6-10ft range with ESE offshore winds and an incoming low tide, when the wave can resemble a northern Peruvian answer to T-Land. Medium consistency and strong currents make this a serious undertaking. It suits only fast, confident surfers who can read shifting sections under pressure. Bottom: sand over rock point. Season: southern hemisphere swell window, typically autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. A jetski is a genuine asset here, not a luxury, given the rip strength, and puncture-resistant tyres plus extra fuel and water are non-negotiable for the long 4WD approach across desert terrain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Few surfers bother with the commitment required to reach Punta Tur, so the lineup is almost always empty. There is no localism to speak of, but the isolation cuts both ways. No one is coming to help if something goes wrong. Paddle with a partner, know your limits in strong current, and never surf alone.

Access & Facilities

Reach the Bayovar headland via 4WD from Piura, around 150km SW. Sandy desert tracks make punctures routine, so carry at least two spare tyres, extra fuel, and more water than you think you need. Facilities are zero beyond basic desert camping. The environment is genuinely unspoiled, pack everything in and pack everything out.

Nearby Alternatives

Nonura, just along the same headland, is the more consistent and celebrated left of the two and worth checking when Punta Tur is sectioning out or blown. Reventazón on the south side of the Ilescas Reserve picks up swell well and offers a change of scenery if the Bayovar points are not cooperating.
