A long, fast left-hander just south of Cabo Blanco, Punta Panico earns its name with rapid tube sections thrown up over a minefield of sharp, barnacle-encrusted rocks. Optimal swell window is tight: look for 220-240 degrees on the forecast, as pure S swell tracks straight past the point. Offshore SE winds combined with S-SW winter swells wrapping around the tip produce the best conditions, with the wave handling 3-15ft and remaining rideable at all tides, though mid to high tide is the clear preference given the exposed rock hazard. This is a tube-master's wave, dominated by a small, dedicated local crew, outsiders who paddle out underprepared will face both localism and genuine danger from submerged rocks mid-wave. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: southern-hemisphere winter swells, April through October. Consistency: medium. Do not paddle out from the beach as the current will drag you onto the rocks, descend via the cliff and rock-dance off the point at high tide.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

A small, tight-knit local crew owns this lineup when conditions align. Localism is real and the vibe can be heavy. Respect the pecking order, take your time reading the wave before paddling out, and do not expect warm welcomes if you are unfamiliar here. Only experienced tube-riders should attempt this wave regardless of social dynamics.

Access & Facilities

There are no facilities at the point. Free parking is available but the access requires crossing the hill and climbing down the cliff to reach the launch zone. Rock-dancing off the point at high tide is the correct entry. Paddling from the beach puts you directly into a strong current. Bring everything you need as there is nothing on site.

Nearby Alternatives

When Punta Panico is too big or the swell angle is wrong, Cabo Blanco to the north fires on N swell as a barrelling reefbreak. Further south, Lobitos offers perfectly shaped point waves that work across a range of conditions and skill levels, and El Hueco at Lobitos delivers heavy barrels for those still hunting serious tube time.
