A faster, hollower alternative to Mancora's main point, Punta Ballenas is a left-hand pointbreak sitting about a 5-minute walk south along the coast. SW to W swells are the trigger here, with SE offshore winds keeping it clean, and mid to high tide the window before the wave starts shutting down over the sharp, shallow rocks. It suits intermediates and above who can handle a quick, sectiony wave that demands commitment rather than casual cruising. Bottom: reef/point. Season: year-round, peaking with consistent SW-W swell windows. Consistency: medium. Kiteboarders move in during afternoons as cross-shore winds build, so a dawn session is worth the early alarm. NW swells push the wave into close-out territory, and the rocky bottom near the surface demands respect from anyone paddling out here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Less traffic than Mancora's main point, partly because the wave demands a higher skill level and partly because the shallow rock ledge discourages casual surfers. Not a spot to take lightly on a crowded afternoon. Go at dawn to get it cleaner and quieter.

Access & Facilities

A short walk south of Mancora town, roughly 5 minutes on foot. No facilities on site, so bring water and wax from town. Free parking available nearby. The rocky bottom is the primary hazard: shallow reef close to the surface means a bad wipeout can be costly. Fins and leash in good condition are non-negotiable.

Nearby Alternatives

Mancora's main point handles NW swells better and is more forgiving for mixed-ability lineups. Further south, El Nuro and Los Organos offer reef lefts that work on overlapping swell windows and are worth checking if Punta Ballenas is messy or blown out.
