One of the most consistent left-hand points in northern Peru, Lobitos wraps SW to NW swell around a sandy-rock point into long, mechanical walls that run 150-300m on a good day. SW swell is the sweet spot, with S-SSW still wrapping in nicely. SE offshore winds keep it clean through the mornings before going sideshore by afternoon, then swinging back offshore near sunset. Low to mid-incoming tide is ideal, with higher tides steepening the inside section and reducing close-outs. The wave suits beginners through advanced surfers, with open-face hot-dogging in smaller surf and genuine barrel sections on bigger days, particularly at the outer tip where La Frontera section hits rocks. Bottom: sand with rocks at La Frontera. Season: year-round, with fall the most reliable window. Consistency: high. Drop-ins are prevalent in the long lineup, so assert your position early and respect priority.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw ultra-crowded lineups and drop-ins are a documented issue across the long point. The local vibe is generally welcoming, but the lineup gets competitive fast when it's pumping. Dawn patrol sessions on weekdays are your best shot at uncrowded waves. Respect the pecking order and take turns rather than snaking.

Access & Facilities

Take a taxi or the local Lobitos vans from Talara, direct pick-up can be arranged through Piscinas Surf House. The dirt-track network from the Panamericana can disorient first-timers, so a local guide is worth it on your first trip. Free parking on site. Surf school available in town. Water quality is clean. A few rocks at La Frontera are the main hazard. Note a historical pattern of armed robbery on the road from Talara, so travel in groups or use trusted local transport.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lobitos is maxing out or over-crowded, El Hueco at the tip of the point delivers heavy reef barrels for experienced surfers only. Piscinas just north offers a mellower alternative on the same swell pulse. El Golf, south of Talara, covers S to NW swells and is worth a check if everything else is blown out.
