A heavy, heaving left-hand barrel detonating over a submerged reef off the tip of Lobitos point, El Hueco is one of Peru's most demanding tubes. It needs solid S-SW swell, 4ft minimum, to start breaking, with SSW at 205° the magic angle for connecting the full 200m wall. Size window is 4-10ft, negative low tides in winter produce the widest, most gaping pits. SE offshores are essential and the wave fires best at dawn before thermals kick in. This is strictly an expert lineup: the take-off is a near-vertical air drop close to exposed rocks, the speed is unrelenting, and anyone without a committed tube stance will not make it out. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: austral winter, May through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a helmet, check the rip before paddling, and do not paddle out if you are not 100% certain of your late drop.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are rare and the lineup stays small, but the surfers present will be the best in the area. Intermediates are actively discouraged and should surf the main Lobitos point instead. Expect a frosty reception if you are not riding at the level the wave demands. Aggression has been reported. Earn your place or stay out.

Access & Facilities

No parking infrastructure, no facilities. Drive north on the Panamerican Highway, exit toward Lobitos around km 1104 past the Quebrada Honda bridge, and follow signs through the oil-field junctions. Paddle out from the back beach and let the current carry you around the corner, or exit via the jump-off at the end of the ride. Rocky shore is close throughout. A helmet is strongly advised. The surrounding landscape is industrial: oil derricks on land, platforms offshore.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Hueco is too small or the swell angle is off, the main Lobitos point offers long, more forgiving lefts for a wider range of skill levels. Generales is the summer option in Lobitos when S swell windows close. El Golf, south of Talara, handles S to NW swell and is a reliable backup across a broader swell window.
