Right · ReefAdvanced3–10 ftMay – Oct

A hollow, powerful reef break delivering legitimate barrels just north of Máncora, Punta Sal fires on SW to NW swells when the rest of Peru's north coast is firing too. Optimal conditions arrive with a solid SW groundswell, offshore winds from the SE, and a low to mid tide that exposes the shallow coral shelf and sharpens the tube sections. The wave starts showing form at 3ft and holds shape well past 10ft, making it a committed surfer's wave from start to finish. Crowds are thin even on weekends, but the shallow reef and live coral demand respect and experience before you paddle out. Bottom: reef. Season: austral winter swells, May through October. Consistency: moderate to good in peak season. Pack reef booties if your feet are soft, and seriously consider a helmet on the bigger days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend counts run light, which reflects the access effort required rather than the wave's quality. The lineup rewards patience and wave knowledge. Read the reef before committing to the channel entry, and give priority to anyone who clearly knows the break.

Access & Facilities

Fly or bus from Lima to Piura, then connect by bus south to Máncora. Punta Sal is roughly 15 minutes north of Máncora by road. Basic services available in Máncora including food, water, and board repair. No lifeguards. Sea urchins and live coral are the primary hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

Máncora itself offers more forgiving beach and point options when Punta Sal is too big or too shallow. Further south, the Lobitos point break is worth a detour when a consistent NW or SW swell is running through the region.
