A fickle but rewarding pointbreak on Peru's North Coast, Punta Restin bends S-SW swells into a line-up that rarely holds a clean shape for long. Optimal swell direction is S to W, with easterly offshores essential to manage the persistent wind exposure. Size works best from 2-10ft, though without the right angle the wave breaks in unpredictable sections and behaves more like a beach break than a true point. Intermediate surfers willing to gamble on inconsistent surf will find it mostly uncrowded, making the trade-off worthwhile. Bottom: reef/point. Season: year-round S-SW swell, but wind is a frequent problem. Consistency: medium. The Panama Current's influence fades here, so water runs 2-3°C colder than Mancora to the north. Arrive at first light to catch the brief window before onshore winds build and turn the line-up chaotic. Bring a board with enough volume to generate speed through the unpredictable sections.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded, which is one of its genuine selling points. The inconsistency and exposure filter most surfers toward more reliable options in the area. No significant localism reported. That said, treat any locals in the water with respect.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site, so bring your own water and food. Free parking available. The spot sits in an isolated stretch of North Peru coastline, worth a check when travelling between Mancora and points north. Water temperature here runs cooler than Mancora, roughly 18-20°C, so a 2mm or 3/2 is advisable.

Nearby Alternatives

If Punta Restin is not cooperating, Cabo Blanco to the north is one of Peru's premier setups for bigger S-SW swells, though it carries heavier crowd energy. Pico Point offers a friendlier alternative when Cabo Blanco is busy, with a bowlier, performance-oriented shape across the same swell window.
