A raw, high-consequence reef break on Peru's north coast, Playa Grande delivers square, hollow barrels that unload over an extremely shallow reef even at high tide. SW to NW swells in the 5-10ft range are the sweet spot, with offshore winds from the SE keeping the face clean. Mid to high tide is mandatory here as the reef is dangerously exposed at low. This is expert-only territory: the takeoff is steep and unforgiving, the tube is fast and dry, and the surrounding desert coastline means help is not close. Bottom: reef. Season: southern hemisphere swell season, May through October. Consistency: moderate. Bring a quality helmet and booties at minimum, and know your limits before paddling out over that shelf.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and weekends both see thin lineups here, the desert access filters out casual surfers. That said, the few regulars who do make the trip know exactly what they're doing. Respect the rotation and read the sets from the channel before committing.

Access & Facilities

From the North Panamericana highway near Km 336, a roughly 1km sand road leads to the beach. The wave is visible from the highway. There are no facilities on-site. Pack water, food, and a first-aid kit. The reef is unforgiving and the setting is remote, so self-sufficiency is not optional.

Nearby Alternatives

North Peru's coastline has several point and reef breaks within driving distance along the Panamericana. When Playa Grande is too big or conditions are off, scout the sheltered point setups further north that handle a wider swell window and offer more forgiving takeoffs.
