A heavy, fast left-hand barrel that breaks in dangerously shallow water just off the rocks of northern Peru's coastline, Cabo Blanco is widely regarded as the best left barrel in South America. NW and W swells from 3-10ft+ trigger the break, with low tide producing the sharpest, most hollow sections. E winds or glassy conditions keep faces clean. Advanced surfers only, the reef is unforgiving, the wave moves fast, and the crowd is serious when it's on. Bottom: sand over reef. Season: November to March. Consistency: infrequent but high-impact when it fires. Wear a helmet if you have one. The wave does not break often, which means when a NW pulse lines up, every experienced surfer in the region arrives at once. Expect a tight, competitive lineup with tense local energy. Respect in the water is non-negotiable. Drop-ins here carry real consequences from both the reef and the crew.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Do not mistake infrequency for emptiness. When Cabo Blanco switches on, the lineup fills immediately with advanced local and traveling surfers who know exactly what they are doing. Local vibe is described as tense. Earn your place, sit wide, wait your turn, and under no circumstances drop in. The reef will hurt you. The locals will not forgive you.

Access & Facilities

From the Panamericana Norte, take the turnoff at Km 1137 at the town of El Alto and follow the paved road roughly 7km to Cabo Blanco. Accessible by car or bus. Hotel El Merlin is the main accommodation option in town. Water is clean. Bring your own wax and medical supplies, this is not a resort town.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cabo Blanco is flat or blown out, the broader Piura region has reef and point options that pick up similar NW and W swell windows. Lobitos, roughly two hours south, offers a more forgiving left-hand point that works in smaller, cleaner conditions and provides a useful warmup or alternative when Cabo Blanco is either maxed out or not yet breaking.
