A left-hand mincing machine on the west side of tiny Saumang Island, The Hole is one of the most consequence-heavy barrels in the Mentawais. Swell must be tracking very S to wrap into the break, with NE to E winds or flat calm to keep the face clean. High tide shifts the take-off zone onto a shallower reef section, adding another layer of complexity to an already technical read. The wave suits experts only: the inside bowl closes out over a coral slab with genuine injury potential, and the lineup is too unforgiving for anyone still building barrel time. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: southern hemisphere winter swells, April through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up with enough volume to drive rail through a square, committed bottom turn, and do not surf the inside section without knowing your exit. Nearby Disco's, off the next island west, is the recommended alternative for surfers who want the Mentawai tube experience without the same life-or-death calculus.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Charter boat traffic passes through the broader Mentawais corridor regularly, but The Hole's demanding conditions and genuinely scary inside section keep the lineup thin. On the rare days it lines up perfectly, expect a tight group of experienced boat surfers. Read the room, give priority to those with clear knowledge of the reef, and do not paddle out if you are unsure of your ability to handle a serious hold-down.

Access & Facilities

No parking, no facilities. Access is by boat only, typically from a live-aboard charter operating out of Padang. The location behind the southern tip of Pagai Selatan means a long transit. Carry a full first-aid kit and reef booties, urchin and coral lacerations are a real risk on the inside section. No onshore amenities exist at this remote island.

Nearby Alternatives

Discos, off the tip of the adjacent island to the west, offers a comparable Mentawai tube experience with somewhat more margin for error and is the standard recommendation when The Hole is misbehaving. Aloita Resort area provides more sheltered options on lay-day swells.
