Chunky left walls and tubes wrap around a small fringing reef island in the southern Mentawais, delivering real power when SW swell fills in with SE winds offshore. Solawi needs more W in the swell to work properly, wrapping around the island in stop-start walls that can link up to 200-500m when the angle is right. SE winds keep it clean, and it fires across all tides, though those more westerly swells are the trigger that separates a pumping session from a frustrating one. It suits confident intermediates through advanced surfers, and the crowd here is thin because the wave is selective. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April-October. Consistency: high when conditions align. A right breaks off the south of the island when the wind swings N, giving you a fallback option on the same boat trip. Pack a board with enough volume to handle heavy water and generate speed through the stop-start sections.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Charter traffic tends to chase the marquee breaks in the Mentawais, leaving Solawi to those who do their homework. The lineup is rarely crowded. Treat the resource accordingly: take turns, read the peak, and keep the vibe quiet. Boat access means visitor numbers stay self-limiting most of the time.

Access & Facilities

Access is by charter or day boat from Padang or the Mentawai island bases. No parking, no facilities on the island itself. Bring everything you need including water, food, reef booties, and a full first-aid kit. The reef is shallow enough that a wipeout on a bigger set carries consequences. Leash check before every session.

Nearby Alternatives

When Solawi is stop-starting without enough W in the swell, Hidden Lefts on the mainland and Sibarubaru Rights on the next small island south are worth the short boat ride. The right off Solawi's south end is a useful wind-switch backup when N winds make the main left messy.
