A machine-like right-hand barrel on a shallow coral platform off Sipora Island, Lance's Right is the defining wave of the Mentawais and one of the most photogenic tubes on the planet. It needs a solid S-SW swell to wrap around Sipora's southern tip, with W or no wind, at mid to high tide, and 6-8ft to really fire. The three sections, The Office at the top, the Main Peak through the middle, and the shallow Surgeons Table inside, link only when size and tide align, producing barrel rides of 50-100m that leave almost no room for error. Advanced surfers will find it endlessly rewarding, intermediates should think carefully before paddling out. Bottom: reef. Season: April to November. Consistency: medium, but surprisingly reliable given the swell refraction required. The take-off is the only practical entry, the wave barrels too fast for much else, and the Surgeons Table will find exposed skin without hesitation.
This is one of the most photographed and sought-after waves in the Mentawais, and charter boats rotate through regularly. The lineup is heavy, competitive, and tight. Local vibe is reportedly welcoming, but the wave demands respect and patience. Dawn sessions before the charter fleet arrives offer the best ratio of waves to surfers.
Access is by boat charter or land camp at Katiet village on Sipora, roughly 100 miles offshore from Sumatra. No parking, no facilities at the break itself. Boat charters depart from Padang. Once in the water, paddle out via the deep channel to avoid the reef on entry. The Surgeons Table is the primary hazard, falling on the inside section at low tide is a reef rash guarantee.
When Lance's Right is too crowded or conditions are off, Lance's Left sits directly across the channel and offers a powerful, more forgiving alternative. Further options across the Sipora region include numerous reef breaks accessible by the same boat charter, giving you flexibility when the main peak is maxed out or mobbed.
