A gut-churning left-hander on Sipora Island in the Mentawai chain, Iceland runs two completely different personalities depending on swell size. On head-high days it serves up a rippable, cruisy wall when neighbouring spots are flat, making it a useful card in the charter boat's hand. But push the swell to genuine west ground swell and Iceland transforms into one of the Mentawais' rare true big-wave venues, producing barrels wide enough to park a boat in. The name comes from the white fizz of air bubbles that hangs in the clear water after each set detonates. It wedges hard out of deep water and unloads onto a very live, shallow reef with the kind of drop that ends sessions. Best read on a moving low to incoming tide with E, NE, or SE winds keeping the face clean. Bottom: reef. Season: peak dry season, April through October. Consistency: swell-dependent, best when large W groundswells arrive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Access is almost exclusively via charter boat, so the lineup reflects whatever flotilla has anchored nearby. On a busy swell window expect multiple boats and competitive conditions. On big days the crowd self-selects to serious surfers and the numbers thin considerably. Respect the lineup order, aggression between boat crews is a known tension point in the Mentawais.

Access & Facilities

Reachable only by charter or day-trip boat from Padang or Tua Pejat. No shore access, no shore facilities. Carry your own first-aid and reef bootie considerations, a wipeout here means reef contact at speed. The shallow reef demands a helmet and impact vest on bigger days. Stock the boat with extra wax and spare fins.

Nearby Alternatives

When Iceland is too big or too small, the broader Sipora zone offers options. Telescopes delivers a more forgiving long wall a short boat ride away. On days when the whole area is maxed, heading south toward the Pagai islands can find more sheltered, workable setups.
