Ariks is a right-hand reef break tucked inside a long point on the Mentawais, coming alive when West-Southwest swells push through and Northeast winds groom the face. It needs WSW swell pushing 6ft or more to switch on properly, at which point it delivers long rolling walls with tube sections and a workable face for drawn-out carves. Winds from the NE are the key driver here, often blowing out better-known nearby spots while leaving Ariks cleaner than usual. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers comfortable on live coral reef, though the wave itself is more forgiving than the heavier slabs elsewhere in the chain. Crowd pressure stays low thanks to boat-access logistics and the fact that it's often a fallback option rather than anyone's primary target. Bottom: coral reef. Season: May to September. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. If the main spots are blown out and a solid WSW groundswell is running, this is worth the detour.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Boat-access keeps the crowd thin. Ariks functions as a secondary option, so the lineup rarely gets contested even when nearby spots are busy. Respect the standard Mentawais boat etiquette: don't snake, call your waves clearly, keep an eye on the channel.

Access & Facilities

Boat only. No beach access, no facilities on-site. Factor in water and snacks from your vessel. Coral reef underfoot, so booties are worth carrying even if the water temperature doesn't demand them. Watch for shallow sections on lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ariks is too fat on smaller swells, the outer points along the same stretch of coast pick up more energy and deliver cleaner shape. Icelands, the longer right on the other side of the point, is the natural upgrade when swell size and conditions allow.
