A submerged reef lurking deep inside a protected Mediterranean bay, Villefranche-sur-Mer only wakes up when the biggest S swells push enough energy past the headlands to hit the peak. SW to SE swell window, NE offshore wind, and the wave works across all tides but demands genuine size to fire. The peak throws mostly lefts, powerful and hollow, with a right that tracks directly toward dry reef under the cliffs, making it genuinely dangerous. Crowds gather when it's on, because rare conditions attract every experienced surfer within driving range. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn and winter, when Mediterranean storm swells peak. Consistency: low. Bring a step-up and full knowledge that the right-hander is not a casual wave. The cold, often murky water adds another layer of discomfort for the unprepared, so a 3/2 is the baseline here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Because it fires so rarely, when conditions align the lineup fills fast with experienced surfers who know exactly what they're waiting for. Respect the pecking order. This is not a wave to drop in on, partly out of courtesy, partly because the consequences over that reef are real.

Access & Facilities

Car park and restrooms available nearby. No major pollution concerns. The primary hazard is the reef itself, particularly the dry rock shelf below the cliffs on the right. Check forecasts carefully before paddling out and have a clear exit plan.

Nearby Alternatives

On smaller swells, Beaulieu-sur-Mer is the recommended alternative in the immediate area. Further west toward Marseille, Cap Couronne and East Marseille spots can pick up E and S swells when this bay sits too sheltered to register anything.
