A low-consistency beachbreak on the Var coast near Cap Lardier, Gigaro only comes alive after strong S or SE wind swells push enough energy into this normally sheltered bay. Optimal conditions are narrow: you need a SE to SW swell, 2-6ft, with the wind swinging NE to go offshore and clean it up. When that window opens it can be surprisingly good for a few hours before onshore slop reasserts. Best suited to intermediates comfortable reading shifting beach peaks, beginners can manage small days but the inconsistency means it rewards patience over persistence. Bottom: beachbreak with scattered rocks. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: low. Arrive at dawn on those rare clean mornings because summer crowds pack the beach even when the waves are flat, and the few rideable days attract every surfer in the area.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is not a major issue, but summer crowds are intense even when it is flat. On the rare day it actually fires, every local surfer within range shows up fast. Go at dawn or out of season to get anything resembling space in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

A carpark serves the beach directly. Lifeguard coverage in season. No significant pollution or hazard concerns beyond the scattered rocks. Water quality is generally fine.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gigaro is flat or blown out, L'Escalet and Cavalaire-sur-Mer are the logical first checks with strong E swell, offering head-high, punchier waves in similar conditions. Le Lavandou further west widens the options if the swell has real size behind it.
