A heavy ledging reef on Maui's north shore, Windmills delivers thick, hollow barrels that demand respect and experience. It catches NW and N swells funneled along the Honoapiilani Highway corridor, with offshore trades keeping faces clean. Mid tide is the sweet spot: too low and the reef gets exposed, too high and the wave loses its ledge. At smaller sizes the peak throws up both rights and lefts, but once the swell climbs past 6ft the left takes over completely, barreling hard down the reef with short, punchy sections. This is not a wave for intermediates feeling ambitious. Bottom: reef. Season: Nov through Mar. Consistency: good in solid winter swells. Park on the highway shoulder, lock your car, and hide every last item of value since break-ins are frequent and brazen.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday lineups are crowded, weekends push into ultra-crowded territory. North shore Maui locals take priority and they know it. Visitors should read the lineup, wait their turn, and avoid dropping in. Patience earns more waves than aggression here. Dawn patrol reduces the pack significantly.

Access & Facilities

Park along Honoapiilani Hwy on the north side of Maui. No formal facilities. Leave nothing visible in your car, theft from vehicles at this pullout is a known, ongoing issue. Bring water and supplies from town. The reef is the main hazard: shallow, sharp, and unforgiving on wipeouts.

Nearby Alternatives

If Windmills is maxed out or too crowded, other north Maui reefs in the same swell window offer varying sizes and less pressure. Ho'okipa is a short drive east and handles similar NW swell with a more structured channel and consistent performance peaks.
