Log Cabins is the twisted alternative to the Pipeline-to-Off-The-Wall stretch, a 200-yard sand-and-lava reef immediately west of Rockpile on Oahu's North Shore. NW to N swells drive the best sessions, with longer-period or more westerly energy largely refracted toward Pipeline by Outer Log Cabins, concentrating northerly power directly into the lineup. Light ENE to S winds keep it clean, and mid to high tide is optimal, typically in the 4-12ft range though it has been ridden far larger. Experts only: the bottom shifts constantly between flat lava tabletops, sand pockets, and hidden rock spikes, making wipeouts potentially catastrophic in ways that arguably exceed Pipeline's danger. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: November through February. Consistency: medium. Arrive at dawn on a clean N swell to find the lineup manageable before the crowd builds along the entire stretch.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is doable with genuine humility and respect, but the surrounding North Shore corridor draws serious crowds on good winter swells. Weekends can be surprisingly manageable compared to peak weekday sessions when photographers and film crews concentrate at Pipeline next door. Read the lineup, wait your turn, and do not paddle around people.

Access & Facilities

Park along Kamehameha Highway in authorized spots. The break sits just west of Rockpile, easy to identify from the road. Lifeguard service is present. Water quality is clean. The reef and rock spires are the primary hazard: a bad wipeout puts you directly onto unpredictable sharp lava. Booties are a personal call but most experienced North Shore surfers skip them here.

Nearby Alternatives

If Log Cabins is too big or closing out, Off-The-Wall to the east offers a more defined, high-performance right on the same swell. Pipeline handles size better when the swell has shape. On smaller days, Pupukea and Ehukai beach peaks provide sand-bottom options with significantly less consequence.
