Sandy Beach on Oahu's southeast coast delivers one of Hawaii's most consequential shorebreaks, a wedging, hollow beachbreak that slams onto a shallow sand bottom with little warning and zero forgiveness. E tradeswell and SE to SW swells drive the shorepound, with W to NNW winds going offshore. Best from chest-high to well overhead. This is expert-level water, crowded most days with bodysurfers, bodyboarders, and spectators. Bottom: sand and reef. Season: year-round, with summer southerly swells and winter offshore wind events adding variety. Consistency: medium. The shorepound zone between the two rock outcroppings is bodysurfing and bodyboard territory only. A separate left reef break fires off the eastern rocky outcropping when swell and offshore winds align, but it is fickle and gets competitive when it switches on. Injuries here are common from wave impact, shallow sand landings, and collisions with other surfers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Bodysurfers are almost always in the water. The reef break draws a tighter pack of experienced surfers when it's working. Vibe is generally welcoming, but spatial awareness is critical in the shorebreak. Falling on other people is a real hazard, not a social faux pas. Humility goes a long way.

Access & Facilities

Sandy Beach Park sits off Kalanianaole Highway with a paved car park and lifeguards on duty. Easy to find, easy to park. Lifeguards are there for a reason: this beach generates a disproportionate share of spinal injuries on Oahu. Watch sets from the sand before paddling out or diving in.

Nearby Alternatives

Makapu'u, just up the road, is Oahu's premier bodysurf and bodyboard wave with longer trundling lefts and a different energy. Kailua Bay to the north picks up tradeswell but is better suited to kite and wind conditions. If the shorepound is too gnarly and the reef isn't firing, checking conditions along the Windward Coast is worth the short drive.
