A wave-magnet on the Kona Coast, Pinetrees draws consistent surf from a wide S-to-NW swell window onto a rocky reef north of Kailua-Kona. SW and S swells dominate summer, while NW and WNW groundswells deliver punch through winter, making it genuinely year-round. Chest-to-overhead is the sweet spot. Offshore winds run NE to SE, and mornings nearly always offer clean, light-wind conditions before an afternoon sea breeze fills in. Beginners can find their footing on smaller days, intermediates get the most value, and the lineup earns its 4/5 crowd rating on weekends and holidays. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round, most consistent in summer. Consistency: high. Come on a weekday morning and show humility in the lineup: this is a popular local hangout and respect is non-negotiable.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a well-known local hangout with a crowd rating of 4/5. Weekdays are manageable, weekends and holidays get genuinely busy. The golf club development changed access but didn't thin the lineup. Humility and patience are the price of entry. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your best call for space and conditions.

Access & Facilities

A paved road now runs around the Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club straight to the break. Car park on site. Camping is available nearby. No significant water quality concerns. Watch for reef, rocks, and urchins on entry, exit, and any wipeout.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pinetrees is maxed or packed, head south toward Honokohau Marina for more left and right options with rental-friendly parking. Banyans, a few kilometres south, is a hollower local favourite when the swell has size and shape. Lymans point, 400m further, wraps S and SW swells into a long-walling left.
