Fast, hollow reef sitting between Rocky Point and Pupukea on Oahu's North Shore, Gas Chambers throws serious barrels over a shallow, sand-patched reef that demands full commitment on every wave. WNW to N swell is the target window, with the lefts generally the standout direction on WNW to NW and the rights coming alive on more northerly push. Calm to light E or S winds are ideal, though the regular ENE trades are manageable when not howling. Best at head-high to double-overhead-plus, and capable at all tides, though mid-range between peak low and peak high keeps the shape most predictable. This is intermediate-to-advanced water when small and strictly expert territory when it steps up. Bottom: shallow reef with sand pockets. Season: winter. Consistency: low. The channels are not well defined, so read the sets carefully before paddling out or you will get worked on the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a lineup when it is working. North Shore respect protocols apply: humility is not optional, it is the entry fee. Experienced locals set the order. If you are not sure whether you belong out there on a given day, you probably do not.

Access & Facilities

Drive past Ehukai Beach Park on Kam Highway and turn onto Ke Nui Road. Park only where authorized. Use public access paths to reach the beach. No facilities on site. Water is clean and clear. The reef and the paddle-out are the primary hazards. Bodyboarders also work this break, particularly in the thicker barrels.

Nearby Alternatives

Ehukai Beach Park next door hosts Pipeline and Backdoor when the swell is pumping. Rocky Point, a short walk west, offers more approachable peaks across a wider swell range if Gas Chambers is too intense or too crowded.
